Content-Type: RST If you looked at your URL bar when visiting here, you would have seen a change: I now reside at http://www.opensourcenerd.com. My apologies to the world's other open source nerds - and I know there are many who are by far more hardcore/pro than I am - but with such a domain open, how could I resist the temptation? .. figure :: http://blog.opensourcenerd.com/upload/temptation Well, actually, I shouldn't take all the credit. My dad_ actually knew I wanted it, along with my personal VPS, so he got it as my 18th birthday present. So, I guess this is my thank you! .. _dad: http://www.n2yo.com Now, why **opensourcenerd.com**? What was wrong with `sufitchi.com/filip`? Or, why not `fsufitch.com` since that's my username everywhere? Let's look at it this way. I need some memorable way for people to find my site. Say I'm at PyCon, and someone asks for my contact information and I don't have any business cards on hand (note to self: make some). I wouldn't want to give them my e-mail address, I'd want to give them the address to this site, so they see a) more info about me, b) this wonderful collection of my words called a blog, and c) maybe my resume_. So, let's imagine some conversations depending on where my site is hosted. .. _resume: http://www.opensourcenerd.com/resume.html **sufitchi.com/filip: (actually happened before)** Person: `Do you have an email, site or somewhere I could find you?` Me: `Oh, yeah. sufitchi.com/filip!` Person: `Cool, a last name domain. How do you spell it?` Me: `S-U-F-I-T-C-H-I.` *Person jots down sufitchi.com/phillip* Me: `Nono. My first name is F-I-L-I-P.` Person: `Oops, my bad.` Actually, not their fault at all for misspelling it. Filip Sufitchi is a very tough name. On the plus side, it's unique, so Googling me only gives results about me. Some of them unsettling_ since I don't know where they got the info from. .. _unsettling: http://www.ohloh.net/p/schooltool/contributors/17461189655584 **fsufitch.com** Person: `Do you have an email, site or somewhere I could find you?` Me: `Oh, yeah. fsufitch.com!` Person: `Gesundheit. Can you spell that?` Me: `F-S-U-F-I-T-C-H dot com.` `*Person jots down fsufitchi.com` Me: `Nono. No "i" at the end.` Person: `Oops, my bad.` A *little* better. Still, it's a little awkward since it's my last name without its last letter. Why can't I make it "fsufitchi" and save some confusion? Problem: I acquired the sort-of nickname "fsufitch" because it was my 8 letter username in the school's computer system. Since then, I've used it for anything programming-related, leaving "fsufitchi" for use in all my chat and more social uses. I'm trying to phase into "fsufitch", to not confuse people, but... .. figure :: http://blog.opensourcenerd.com/upload/indifference **opensourcenerd.com** Person: Do you have an email, site or somewhere I could find you? Me: Oh, yeah. opensourcenerd.com! Person: Haha, fitting! Me: Thanks! `*Person jots down opensourcenerd.com` Bingo. It's easy to remember (even if they don't have pencil+paper), easy to spell, and rather fitting. Besides, how cool is it to be *the* open source nerd (according to my website)? And plus, who knows? The future's a big place, open source nerds might be needed! Or so I hope. **Edit:** Amar Sahai proposes: "You forgot one scenario: Person: `What's your website?` Me: `opensourcenerd.com` Person: `...Bastard.` `*Person walks away*` ". That's why I apologized to the other open source nerds out there at the beginning. And, if he didn't already read my blog, he sucks anyway.
